I made it safe and sound to Kenya yesterday... Bags and all! I was picked up at the airport by one of the African Impact drivers, and made the treck to Limuru, dodging potholes, people, and the occasional livestock. Limuru is a jungle oasis in itself. There are fields of tea crops and native trees and flowers everywhere. It's actually much colder than I expected! The grounds of Brackenhurst, where the volunteer house is located, are gorgeous! I was able to have a quick yoga practice in the yard this afternoon.
There are 10 other volunteers staying at the house (7 girls sharing one bathroom... Yikes), but people will be coming and going through out my stay. I had induction this morning, but was able to work 1/2 day at Janet Junior Academy this afternoon. It was so fun and eye opening at the same time! The children are very friendly, loving, and so curious! They all are called by their Christian names and the older children know English very well. There are about 300 students at Janet, with the oldest class being 9 and 10 years old in "class 5" The school grows along with the classes, so Happy Africa Foundation is currently fundraising to build a school house for next year when the class 5 is ready for class 6. I worked in class 1 with 5 year olds and we sang songs, and taught addition and colors. I will actually be placed with Bethel Academy for good next week, and will only help out in the morning at Janet Junior preparing food for lunch.
I'll post some pictures later...I'm going to enjoy my time with the children this week and get to know them better first.
